Understanding presbyopia

Presbyopia typically begins in the early to mid-40s. It is important to note that refractive errors in the eye lens are not solely indicative of aging.

Presbyopia occurs when the eye's lens cannot adjust sufficiently to focus on close objects. While the lens is flexible in youth, allowing for easy accommodation, it becomes stiff with age. This loss of elasticity in the surrounding fibers makes it challenging for the eye to focus on nearby images.

Early signs of presbyopia include the need to hold reading materials farther away and experiencing eye strain after extended close work. While presbyopia cannot be cured, it can be effectively managed with appropriate treatments.

At Dau Family Eye Care, we offer individualized diagnosis and proactive management of presbyopia to achieve better treatment outcomes for each patient's unique visual health needs.

Symptoms of Presbyopia

Over the years, people gradually develop the symptoms of presbyopia. Some of the most typical symptoms include the following:

  • Difficulty seeing small print, particularly in poor light
  • Craving to hold reading or any other materials at very long distances
  • Blurred vision when looking at objects near
  • Eye fatigue or headache because of too much reading or using gadgets
  • Difficulty in focusing from afar to near and vice versa.

If you notice any of the symptoms above in your eyes, bring yourself in for a comprehensive check-up with us at Dau Family Eye Care to determine whether it is indeed presbyopia or another visual disturbance.

Poor Eye Examinations for Diagnosis

Typically, presbyopia is detected during a routine eye examination; hence, our doctors can assess the status of your near-vision and any other areas associated with the general health of your eyes while providing any other needed corrective options.

While on this process, our optometrists will consider:

  • Medical & visual history relevant to your current eye status and lifestyle needs.
  • Visual Ocular test to ascertain your seeing ability from various distances.
  • The refraction assessment helps to determine the exact power of lenses required to correct vision.
  • The external and internal examination of your eyes rules out other possible agents contributing to any vision changes.

The cumulative results of these tests indicate a diagnosis of presbyopia, and we can prepare a treatment plan based on your preference for glasses, contact lenses, or another form of correction.

Treatment Of Presbyopia

There is no way to stop or reverse presbyopia at present; modern vision care does offer treatment options that may be effective. Well, we at Dau Family Eye Care offer the best personalized solutions to keep your vision clear and comfortable all the way.

1. Reading Glasses
Reading glasses are the simplest solution for presbyopia, as many patients benefit from them. These lenses are intended for near activities, such as reading, sewing, or using a smartphone. Reading glasses come in varying strengths and can therefore be individually prescribed by our doctors for optimum clarity.

2. Bifocal or Trifocal Glasses
A combination of many prescriptions is used in the same frame of glasses to provide distant vision. In these glasses, patients wear distance lenses on the upper segment of the lens, with a near-distance lens on the lower segment. The advantage is that the patient will always wear a single pair of glasses, without switching between pairs all day.

3. Progressive Lenses
Unlike ordinary bifocal lenses, progressive lenses provide a smooth transition from near to intermediate to distance vision without a visible line separating them. Many patients prefer the cosmetic look and the natural vision experience of progressives. The team at Dau Family Eye Care ensures that your progressive lenses are fitted precisely so that you enjoy maximum comfort and operation.

4. Multifocal Contact Lenses
If you prefer contact lenses to eyeglasses, multifocal contact lenses are an excellent alternative for treating presbyopia. These lenses have multiple zones to provide different distance vision. All our optometrists are well-trained in fitting and applying multifocal contact lenses. They will assist you in determining which lens best fits your eyes and lifestyle.

5. Monovision Contact Lenses
Monovision is another option for contact lenses for presbyopia, meaning one eye is corrected for distance while the other is corrected for near tasks. With a little time to get used to it, most people do adjust well to this method, though it can differ from person to person. Our doctors will assess your candidacy for monovision and provide you with personalized support during the adaptation period.
